IQ or Intelligence Quotient is a total score derived from several standardized tests designed to assess human intelligence. Historically, IQ is a score obtained by dividing a person's mental age score, obtained by administering an intelligence test, by the person's chronological age, both expressed in terms of years and months. The resulting fraction is multiplied by 100 to obtain the IQ score.
So we come to the core question of this blog, can the IQ of your child be Increased through Brain Training? The answer though not very clear has shown indications over a period of time that we can increase the fluid Intelligence of a child if we were to work on the cognitive skills of the child. Cognitive skills are the Core skills your brain uses to think, read, learn, remember, reason, and pay attention. Working together, they take incoming information and move it into the bank of knowledge you use every day at school, at work, and in life.
It Has also been established through studies that Several neurophysiological factors have been correlated with intelligence in humans, including the ratio of brain weight to body weight and the size, shape, and activity level of different parts of the brain. Specific features that may affect IQ include the size and shape of the frontal lobes, the amount of blood and chemical activity in the frontal lobes, the total amount of gray matter in the brain, the overall thickness of the cortex, and the glucose metabolic rate.
So It can be safely assumed that if we had a Brain Training Program or a Brain Training course that could lubricate the four lobes of our brain or provide the brain with the exercises needed to stimulate the lobes of the brain we would be able to bring about a change in the IQ level of the child.
Since it is now established that the cognitive skills of the child can be improved if we help him with a stimulated program we will look at how these skills can be enhanced. There are various types of Brain Training Programs & Brain Development Courses which are tuned to help in the development of cognitive skills. These Brain Training programs could be physical in nature or computer generated games which would help the child to engage in the process of building and developing his cognitive skills.
The Brain Training Courses which are commonly available use the process of Exercise and Music since it has been shown through studies that Music does have a effect on the IQ levels of the child if they are exposed to certain genre of music at different frequencies. How long these effects last is still a subject of debate, but combined with the physical exercise which is co related to health does have a long term effect on the IQ of the child.
Certain Brain Training Programs and Brain Training Courses are designed over a period of time and the results would be visible over a given time frame. The courses could extend from one year duration to over 3 years also depending on the Age and level of difficulty that the Brain Training Program or Brain Training course would like you to attempt.
As we have already read above the IQ is also co related to the cognitive skills and also involves a lot of Right Brain and Left Brain Co-ordination which is necessary for overall development of cognitive skills children also benefit from the multiple Brain Training Programs and Brain Training Courses which help in the Right Brain Training with the use of Digitized music, Visualization Process and Neurobic Exercises.
So to conclude it would be right to say that Brain Training would have a profound effect on the IQ of the child and would definitely help the child increase his IQ – or at least the fluid Intelligence.
One of the Pioneers in this field is BRAINY – A division of Brain Child Learning which helps in Brain Training for Children in the age group of 7 to 16 year olds. They have a methodology of Training which Involves Meditation / Digitised Music – to open new neural pathways in the brain and Neurobic Exercises which help the mind stay agile and alert. The Blended training provides all round development of the brain with multiple benefits. One of the components is the Memory Training course which focuses on retention and recall of long term and short term memory.
To know more you can refer to www.brainy.co.in for more information on their training methodology or Google the term “Brain Training Course” or “Brain Training Program” to get a list of training available for helping develop IQ and honing cognitive skills.
